Various Artists- Trojan Ganja Reggae Box Set [2008]

This is a great compilation. Disc 1 is early reggae (1970-1974), mostly instrumentals, pretty rare tracks too. Stand out tracks are 'Kaya' by Bob Marley (produced by Lee Perry) and 'Half Ounce' by Big Youth, which is a dub of the rockfort rock rhythm.
Disc 2 is 1975-1978, the roots era, Horace Andy's take on Cornell Campbell's 'Gorgon' plus the dub, 'The Reggae Crusaders' doing a version of Flabba Holt's African Train riddim (very cool) plus the dub, 'Bushweed Corn Trash' plus dub, three versions of the Rupie Edwards 'Irie Feelings' rhythm, 4 versions of Linval Thompson's 'I Like To Smoke Marihuana' and more solid roots efforts by Johnny Clarke, Joe White, Tappa Zukie & Cornell Campbell. 'Ashanti Ganja Dub' is an extended dub work out of that old soul song 'Stand By Me'.
Disc 3: 1977-1985, beginning to sound more like dancehall, with mostly The Revolutionaries and the Roots Radics playing as backing band. A lot of cool dub tunes here, Horace Andy's 'Collie Weed' is on the 'I Need A Roof' rhythm, 'Herb' by the Revolutionaries is the 'Scorcher' rhythm, 'Collie Weed' by Barrington Levy = 'My Conversation'; 'Scientist Ganja Dub'= African Beat, 'Cannabis Dub' = heavenless (very hypnotic), 'Sensi For Sale' by the Tufftones is a somewhat dated but still enjoyable take on the 'Sleng Teng' and the only digital tune on this great compilation.

Trojan Tribute To Bob Marley Box Set (Limited Edition) (Remaster) Release [2002]

Tribute To Bob Marley Box Set is a collection of cover versions of Bob Marley and Wailers tracks and cover versions can usually be listed under avoidable tolerable and enjoyable and variations in the between the 3 terms listed, Each Disc in this collection opens with a couple of introductions and eulogy’s to Bob Marley, Though I find it odd that Carlton Livingston refers to Bob Marley as Bobby mainly because I find 'Bobby Marley' sounds like a 70's English footballer.

‘No Woman No Cry’ is probably the most well known Marley track and they are some good takes of that song here such as Derrick Morgan with ‘Some Woman Must Cry’ which is followed by The Aggrovators version of that track, Tommy McCook gives us a sax-led instrumental take called ‘The Meducia’ and Tappa Zukie gives us his own take on ‘’No Women No Cry’ retiled as ‘Natty Dread Don’t Cry’ and finally Ken Boothe gives us his own great take on the above mentioned track.

Judy Mowatt, who would later join The Wailers Band, gives us a beautiful take on ‘Mellow Mood’ which is followed up with its original B-side an instrumental take on ‘Mellow Mood’ If fact this is something I love about the box set you will have a version of a Marley track follow by a version of that version excellent stuff particularly the Inner Circle tracks that are followed by Augustus Pablo versions and especially the versions of 'Dreamland' which has all ways been a favorite of mine and the U Roy version present here is excellent indeed and is followed up by a version by The Upsetters,

Big Youth with his cover of 'Get Up Stand Up' is the highlight of Disc 2 for me it beats Ken Lazarus - Duppy Conqueror into second place, Also on Disc 2 are Maingy Dog and Skanky Dog which are versions of a Peter Tosh track 'Maga Dog"' so its a bit odd that they are on a Bob Marley Tribute album and you can hear that Peter Toshtrack on another box set Trojan Bob Marley & Friends Box Set, Disc 3 has quite a few gems starting with Dennis Brown with 'Concrete Jungle', Killerman Jarrett with 'War' , The Fab Five Inc. with 'Guava Jelly' and John Holt with Keep On Moving (which was one of the first Marley tracks that I heard back in 1994)

Of course the best track on Disc 3 is the last one Joe Gibbs All Stars instrumental take on 'Duppy Conqueror' called 'Ghost Capturer' which ties with Tommy McCook instrumental track ‘The Meducia’ as the best tracks on this box set.DISC 1

A gravadora inglesa Trojan já é velha conhecida dos admiradores do reggae produzido entre meados dos anos 60 e início dos 70. Com uma história atribulada, vem se especializando na reedição destes clássicos da música jamaicana. No ano passado foram lançadas algumas caixas antológicas, cada uma com 3 Cds, dedicadas aos diferentes estilos da música de Jah. Apesar de cobrirem uma pequena parte do catálogo da Trojan (talvez o mais extenso do meio), servem como uma excelente introdução para os estilos apresentados e também como um importante acréscimo para a discoteca de colecionadores e pesquisadores do ritmo. TROJAN RECORDS

Desde sua criação em 1968, a Trojan Records sempre foi e ainda é um selo de referência da música jamaicana. Tal patamar foi alcançado por sempre apresentar o que há de melhor em sons jamaicanos clássicos, Rocksteady e reggae que explodiram nos anos de seu lançamento, até os estilos modernos de Dancehall e Jungle. A Trojan é reconhecida mundialmente por sua excelência em qualidade de suas produções, famosas por destacarem e lançarem nomes importantes da nata do talento jamaicano, como Bob Marley & Wailers, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Toots & The Maytals e Inner Circle, além de uma infinita lista de artistas ilustres. Produtores que foram primordiais ao desenvolvimento da produtora receberam também a atenção devida, com os trabalhos de figuras legendárias como Arthur 'Duke' Reid, lee ' Scratch ' Perry, Clement ‘Coxsone ' Dodd e Leslie Kong que caracterizaram as primeiras obras da Trojan.

Um ano antes de sua fundação oficial, a Island Records lançou uma “amostra” para as produções de Duke Reid, o que seria futuramente o início de infinitas gravações. O próprio nome derivou-se dos Leyland ‘Trojan’ Trucks que eram os famosos caminhões utilizados para transportar os pesados equipamentos de som (Sound System) do produtor. Esses caminhões rodavam por todo canto da ilha, trazendo sempre novas produções e organizando pequenas festas por toda Jamaica, onde receberam o brasão “Duke Reid, The Trojan King of Sounds”.

Em 1968, o rico empresário Lee Gopthal fundiu sua empresa ao Trojan e ao contrário das primeiras produções, a nova etiqueta da Trojan baseou-se em variadas fontes, como os produtores britânicos Dandy e Joe Mansano além de nomes jamaicanos ainda não muito divulgados com Lee Perry, Bunny Lee, Clancy Eccles e também o próprio Duke Reid. O tempo passou e o número de produções foi aumentando cada vez mais, o que acarretou na formação de uma série de etiquetas “subsidiárias” que tinham como responsável um único produtor...

Exemplos disso foram Amalgamated (Joe Gibbs), High Note (Sonia Pottinger), Upsetter (Lee Perry), Jackpot (Bunny Lee), Clandisc (Clancy Eccles) e Downtown (Robert 'Dandy' Thompson). No ano seguinte o esquema continuou e pelo menos mais trinta novas diferentes etiquetas surgiram com o selo Trojan.

No verão de 2001, a Trojan foi adquirida pelo Sanctuary Records Group que se ajustou rapidamente aos padrões da etiqueta e são considerados internacionalmente líderes na produção de discos da música jamaicana.
