Jah Thomas - Tribute To Reggae King Bob N. Marley [1981]

Nkrumah "Jah" Thomas nasceu em 1955,em Kingston, Jamaica. É um cantor no estilo toaster DJ, produtor de gravação do reggae,arranjador e engenheiro de mixagem, que veio primeiramente á proeminência no final dos anos 1970s, ajustando suas próprias etiquetas Midnight Rock e Nura Label. Nkrumah Thomas teve seu nome como homenagem ao líder nacionalista africano Kwame Nkrumah,e adotou o nome artístico Jah Thomas e começou a cantar e DJ na metade dos anos1970, trabalhando com produtores tais como Alvin Ranglin, que liberou seu single "Midnight Rock", que cobriu as cartas jamaicanas no álbum de estréia em 1976. Jah Roots returns as strong as ever, but if you wanna hear 'em this time out, you'll have to pay, you deadbeats (see cdbaby.com). People have families to feed, y'know. After releasing their first two albums to the masses free of charge, the band understandably has decided to go the standard retail route with Crucial. It continues in the same vein as their previous efforts -- invigorating roots with a free-flowing, "jamming" vibe that at times samples past classic cuts (like Israel Vibration's "Same Song" riddim on "Secrets" and Barrington Levy's "Murderer" on "Don't You See the Problem") and that just makes you want to boogie. As with Babylon Weak Heart, they hook up with DJ SkillinJah (for one cut) and add another two sing-jays to the mix, I-Ron and Badda Skat. These guests represent admirably and throw a jolt of party energy into songs like "Good Highs" and "Chant Down Babylon," but it's Ras Josh who continues to be one of the most engaging singers in reggae today. He combines a Marley-esque wail with Ali Campbell-esque soul and throws in a blues singer's calculatedly ragged edge and a jazz singer's vocal improvisation to craft a style that would make "Mary Had a Little Lamb" listenable. From up-tempo jams like "One to One," "Poverty," the anti-babylon rant "Don't You See the Problem," and the title track to more mellow grooves like "Roll Up the Spliff," "System a Dread," "Secrets," and the anthemic "Fight Down We Chalwa," Crucial soars. Hopefully, its mainstream distribution will draw more fans into the Jah Roots sound.

In just three short years, Jah Roots has established itself as one of the most dependable American reggae bands, thanks to skilled musicianship and an intriguing lead vocalist in (Ras) Josh Heinrichs. Joy is a solid follow-up to their previous "crucial" album, Crucial, incorporating the rousing roots sound we're used to hearing from the group, with touches of jazz and dancehall in the mix. This time around, DJ I-Ron becomes a co-lead vocalist, appearing on 9 of the 12 tracks, unfortunately dampening some of the impact of Ras Josh's singing. This isn't to say that I-Ron is a bad DJ -- indeed, he's a more than capable performer (although the rapping on "Home" doesn't work for me) -- but his aggressive delivery sometimes overpowers the mellow mood set by Heinrich's vocals (as with the otherwise melancholy "The Truth"). That said, Jah Roots is one of those bands that could perform anything and make it sound good. Even if you don't really like an individual song, you still enjoy the overall sound. This is what I like to call "groove reggae." The title track, a rousing jam propelled by a chugging organ-like riddim, is perhaps the highlight, although the haunting "Wanting You," the energetic weed anthem "Ganja Weed" (featuring legendary Wailers guitarist Junior Marvin), the love song "Only Wanna Be With You," and the quirky remix to "Spliff & My Lady" stand out as well. A história da música Jah Live

A morte do imperador da Etiópia, Hailé Selassié I, em 27 de agosto de 1975, parecia ser o golpe fatal no movimento rastafari. Para os rastas, ele era a encarnação de Deus, ou Jah, e deveria conduzir os negros do mundo inteiro `a redenção e `a vitória na luta contra a Babilônia.
O Jornal “Daily Gleaner” preconizava que Jah estava morto.
A forma esguia de Bob mal era visível à pouca luz emitida pelos escassos spots do estúdio de gravação de Harry J no número 10 da avenida Roosevelt em Kingston. Vestindo uma camisa de algodão marrom, calças de brim e requintadas botas de camurça, ele se postava de mãos nos quadris no meio do abarrotado estúdio de pé-direito alto. Uma delicada nuvem de fumaça subia de um spliff em sua mão, circundando-lhe a cabeça reclinada de onde pendiam os dreadlocks enquanto ele se concentrava. O relógio da parede marcava 10:30 de uma certa noite no mês de setembro de 1975.
As gravações para o disco Rastaman Vibration dos Wailers haviam sido deixadas de lado para permitir um projeto especial, de emergência. O engenheiro Sylvan Morris, um negro corpulento e solene, sentava-se envergado sobre a mesa de dezesseis canais no lado de lá do painel de vidro sujo que separava a cabine de controle do estúdio; ele pegou uma garrafa bojuda de Dragon e tomou um gole enquanto aguardava algum sinal para dar início à fita. Não se ouvia nada, exceto a deglutição de Sylvan, seguida de um arroto abafado.
Talvez tenham-se passado dois minutos até que Bob levantou a juba de Medusa. Ele colocou os fones de ouvido, deu uma tragada de encolher as bochechas no spliff e fez um aceno com a cabeça. Uma trilha instrumental que os Wailers tinham feito à tarde começou a jorrar dos gigantescos monitores pendurados acima da mesa de mixagem.
Havia um padrão de bateria, um baixo entorpecente pilotando a bateria, e uma guitarra rítmica em surdina. Bob deu um passo rápido em direção ao microfone e paralisou as dez pessoas que se amontoavam na cabine do engenheiro quando começou a cantar:

Os rostos de Family Man e Carly se congelaram num amplo sorriso beato que eles compartilharam com os outros presentes: Al Anderson; Lee Perry e sua esposa; Rita; Marcia Griffiths e sua amiga Judy Mowatt, ex-vocalista do grupo Gaylets e terceira integrante de um trio recém-formado chamado I-Threes – o novo grupo vocal de apoio dos Wailers; além de dois recentes acréscimos a estes, o organista Bernard “Touter” Harvey e Earl “Chinna” Smith na guitarra base. Ninguém se mexia, todos com os olhos pregados na figura magricela do outro lado do vidro. Sua cabeça esbelta jogava para trás e ondulantes guirlandas de uma espessa fumaça branca exalavam de suas largas narinas enquanto ele pleiteava devoção atemporal ao Jah Rastafári.
E enquanto ele cantava, a aguçada malha musical ficava cada vez mais alta, crescendo em espirais, num círculo estonteante de tensão e relaxamento, tensão e relaxamento, até o controle psíquico tornar-se insuportável. Gotas de suor surgiam na testa ampla do rosto barbudo de Family Man, e seu sor-riso nele estampado mostrava-se cada vez mais maníaco, quase grotesco.
Sem avisar, Marley girou de repente e explodiu em áspera exultação primal que retumbou pelo prédio como um maremoto. As estátuas escuras do outro lado do vidro, de um salto, voltaram à vida; começaram a pinotear e a arremeter em furioso abandono e logo a dançar de uma saleta para outra enquanto Marley mandava sua áspera voz de tenor nas maiores alturas:

Em uma semana, Jah Live estava em todas as lojas de discos de Kingston. Um sujeito do Daily Gleaner foi até o estúdio de Harry J para perguntar a Marley sobre o grande sucesso, e Bob lançou-lhe um olhar que quase fez parar o coração do repórter.

– Não se pode matar Deus – sussurrou Marley.
