O que há em Bob Marley que o fez ser amado por tantos, de países, culturas, raças, religiões e classes sociais tão diferentes? Relembro da primeira vez que o encontrei. Eu estudava em uma escola na Inglaterra e vinha a Jamaica passar o Natal. Um grande amigo, Dickie Jobson, passou por minha casa em Saint Andrew e me falou de uns caras de Trench Town. Tendo crescido em um bairro de classe média alta como St. Andrew, nunca tinha passado nem perto de Trech Town. Lembro-me de tê-los visto no quintal perto da casa de Bob, conversando com Dickie. Seria apenas sete anos depois que encontraria com ele de novo sob circunstâncias muito diversas-através de sua então namorada, a afro-americana Yvette Morris Anderson-na casa da Hope Road. [...]

BOB MARLEY NO BRASIL

Entre muitos outros ele ensinou Bob Marley, Derrick Harriott, Peter Tosh, Bob Andy, The Wailing Souls e Bunny Wailer.Um dos primeiros artistas locais a gravar na jamaica, seu primeiro single em parceria com Roy Wilson, foi "Many Oh" vendeu mais de 50.000 cópias na jamaica em 1960. O que o levou assinar um contrato com Edward Seega, que mais tarde se tornou Primeiro Ministro da Jamaica durante os anos 80.

"Ele foi meu primeiro empresário", Higgs relembra um pouco antes da sua morte, junto com um sorriso maroto, "A gente sempre era pago". Seega conseguiu colocar Higgs em shows locais ao lado de Sam Coke, Jackie Wilson e outras estrelas estrangeiras.Em 1964, ele gravou "There’s A Reward For Me" para o produtor Coxsone Dodd. A música se tornou um clássico instantâneo de sofrimento e esperança.Apesar de ele reclamar que nunca recebeu nada das vendas, ele estava muito furioso com este fato, dizendo "Eu percebo que a única pessoa que pode dar o meu prêmio e tudo que eu tenho direito é o todo poderoso".Foi na casa de Higgs que o jovem Bob Marley recebeu anos de aulas privadas de técnicas vocais e interpretação, e anos antes de começar a gravar com o seu grupo The Wailers.
